Settling In...

In case your were wondering...the tree came down Saturday.  I think it was barely up two weeks.  I usually keep it up a tad bit longer since I am such a late starter in getting it up.  I do hate to take all the Christmas decorations down right away after Christmas. January can be sooooooooo  bleak.  Over the years I have adopted a more winter decorative approach then just Christmas, so I keep up some of the twinkle lights, the glittery things, candles...lots of candle and some touches of red.  I must make it through to the begining of Feb. when I can just about begin to think about spring starting to burst. Some years around here we can have an early spring starting in Feb.
Another tacktic I use for those mid-winter blues is greenery and bulbs. I was just in time to snatch up the last box of narsissis bulbs, and plopped them into some water just before wrapping my packages.  I already have some blooms bursting forth.  At the same store I pick up a discounted cyclamen. It has perked up just fine with lovely pink blossoms ready to burst.   This is the time of the year I also indulge in some weekly bouquets of fresh flowers too. I just picked up two stems of pink lilies for under $4.00 at my local super market.  The scent is heavenly.

Last week we just layed low. I couldn't even motivate myself to go out and hit those great after holidays sales.  Oh well, I think I did my civic duty to the economy during my Christmas shopping. It was a great relaxing week of reading, blogging, and some movie watching.  Tonight I found out we are having some guests coming into town for the weekend...I am really glad now that I got that tree down =]

What are some of your tricks for getting through a long winters night?

The kitchen sink photo is absolutely gorgeous...very English-looking. Is that at your home? I love it! :)

These pictures are so beautiful and inspiring to me. The one of your kitchen sink looks like it should be in a magazine. The flowers you have in your home made me want to go right out and buy some for me. Snow...I will always like it. I am definitely a fan of winter. I liked seeing the snow in the dessert. And yes, I took my tree down too, but left up the greens and the sparkly touches.

Hope your day is a special one!

Your home sounds as if it'd be a winter wonderland...I like your idea of candles and lights for long evenings. I don't do much winter decorating. Wait! I have a leftover poinsettia...will that count?

Ahh, beautiful and guess what my post is on tomorrow? Paperwhites!

Happy New Year to you and your family!

I love your 'indoor winter garden' idea! I meant to force bulbs indoors this winter...and forgot again. But I made a trip to the garden shop today and brought home a cheery little bloom...I'm tiring of my poinsettias.

Oh we have the same idea about getting some fresh flowers in. I like to get the ones on sale, a lot of them, and spruce them up. Anything but roses, although I love them, do not last long but some of the others do. I haven't visited for awhile, like others too much going on. Hope all are well and I enjoyed visiting.

Yes, most definitely I am with you in terms of candles, fresh flowers and taking it easy after Christmas. Love the photos.

Love all your greenery and flowers...just the thing for the dark winter days.

my tree was up such a short time this year due to having to wait until after the Golden wedding celebration.

I too always buy flowers every two weeks during the year and appreciate them most during the winter.

Someone bought me some Hyacynth bulbs but with the ground under lots of snow and ice they willnot be planted for a while.

How do I use the dark winter days. I try to catch up on things that get left at other times - crafting and writing and computing and research and such but more and more I find b logging takes precedence. I must make sorting out my family tree stuff a priority this year though.

We didn't have our tree up very long this year either. The nights are so long in the winter, aren't they? I pile up in my comfy chair with books and journals and pens and paste and do alot of dreaming through January and February. Also--my paperwhites didn't get planted before Christmas so I have that greenery to enjoy for the next few weeks. ~Kathy
P.S. Thank you for your prayers for Kiya. My appreciation is heartfelt.

Fresh flowers about the house definitely bring hope that Spring will be here. Long, dark winter days can really get me down. I think I suffer a bit from seasonal affective disorder. To help keep the blues at bay I try to get outside, even if it's just for a few minutes. Breathing deep and filling my lungs with fresh air is invigorating. Like you, I light candles and watch movies. Also, I use this time of year to get to some of my creative projects. Most of all, I try to get out and have time with my friends: coffee at a fun coffee house, meeting at the local bookstore, lunch in a new location. I try all sorts of things that are beautiful, stimulating and a little different. Hang in there, Spring will be here and we'll welcome her with open arms!
