Closet Organizer

That sounds like a sound bite going around the media these days Community Organizer. I swear this has nothing to do with politics. I am just frankly amused at myself.

Yes I am completely amused. I don't spend a lot of time or money on cloths. It is a task I just try to deal with in one big swoop on a seasonal basis. Usually in one day I purchase what I need for the upcoming season. I hit the sales and a few stores and I am done! It may be prolonged for a day or two, if when I come home and retry on my purchases I decide something was a bad decision. I will trudge out another day with my returns and pounce on something else and be done with it. Unless a special occasion arises or I have overlooked a particular need. I do not like to shop especially at the mall for any prolonged time periods. Cloths shopping for entertainment value is just not my thing. My daughters how ever have spent their teenage lives trying to drag me around and around the malls to simply buy one shirt or one dress or one pair of pants or their fall wardrobe. I finally made them do all the trudging and put things on hold. Then in one big swoop I would go with them to make their purchases and pay the bill :) Shopping is just not entertainment for me.

I am leading into something here....the closet. Just as I have not paid much attention to my wardrobe I have not paid much attention to my closet. I just kind of pick and chose from a current section of my closet usually where my new seasonal purchases are hung in the middle. While non current clothing gets shoved to the sides. Once in a while...maybe twice a year I go through stuff and pitch. Well this year as I was switching from summer to fall, I had this obsession come over me to color coordinate my closet. Once I saw a closet that was color coordinated by a young man in the youth group. When we were invited over for a party. All the other room mates were anxious to show off this guy's closet. It looked like this!!! Only it was three times the size. I was completely stunned. I thought it was very obsessive compulsive behavior. Who does this????

Well here I am 50 something and just figuring out that this is really the most practical time saving way to deal with the whole clothing thing. I cannot believe it took me this long to catch on! One thing I discovered after I completed this task sometime around two in the morning (ha, when true genius moments hit ) was all the cloths I didn't realize I had. Especially when they were grouped by color. How many white shirts do I own? Hehe more than I knew.

Our closet looks something like this with my cloths on the top rack and my DH on the bottom. We have one side with shelves, and another side for long items and hanging shoe holders.

The first thing my husband said when he viewed my amazing task of organization was that was easy, you only have white, black, brown and blue in your closet. Another light switched on, I am such a neutral lover! So easy to deal with. It is now actually fun to go to my closet to dress for the day. And pretty easy to figure out if I need to go shopping for anything. Maybe I should add some color...hmmmm
Yes I am amused!

Whoops....ladies these are not my closets...but this one is. I apparently do have a few pinks and one burgundy top haha...DH :) Notice he has a lot of blue and his half is not color organized lol!

Bless you my friend! On this early Wednesday morning, you have inspired me. I'm off to my closet today. You did an outstanding job in this organizational category. And yes, my closet consists of basically the same colors as yours, despite how much fun my family jokingly makes of me. I will tell them about you too. Makes me feel better. Happy day to you and to me in my closet.

Everyone out in blogland seems to be organizing cupboards...and I'm beginning to get the message. First thing I noticed...I need to go buy hangers that are all the same. Then I need to call you to make order out of my chaos...and we'll be all set.

Wow...your closet looks amazing! How long can will it stay that way?

Like Judy, I've noticed a lot of organizing going on out there in Blog Land.

You are a kindred spirit. Yes, I also organize my closet by color, and I first thought of doing this when I was about 50, nearly a decade ago! Not only that, I put all the similar color tops in one section, in order of whether they have no sleeves, short sleeves, 3/4 sleeves, and long sleeves. is that weird? No idea - probably is! My slacks are in another section, by color. Down below I have blue jeans and casual pants. CT has his stuff on the other side of the closet, and he does not color coordinate.

Yes, I go through a few times a year and get rid of things I haven't worn in quite a while. I really enjoy doing that.

I used to wear a lot of black, almost every day and decided I needed more color; now I've got green, blue, red/orange/pink sections too. Plus brown, black and white of course.

It's fun, don't you think?

Wow...I'm impressed sister dear. I had to chuckle all the way through your post. Everything you shared is soooo true (from her sister's point of view).

On the other hand, I've been color coordinating my clothing for years. Every season I go through my wardrobe and pitch what I'm done with and keep what I like and still wear. And to take it a step further, I do this for my hubby too. Teehee...I guess I am obsessive compulsive and proud of it!

Sis: I can't believe I never noticed your color coordinated closet...ha...I just remember allllllllll those shoes! Not to mention purses! We are so different in some ways ;)

Sara: I have always suspected you as a kindred spirit in more ways than one!

Ladies: I am glad to have been a source of inspiration...I still can't get over myself :) How long it will last...so far it's all good!

For someone who hates clothes shopping you have quite a closet!

I go through everything in January and have a clear out. Colour co-ordination would not work for me as I have different kinds of items together in different areas. E.g. Short sleeved blouses, long sleeved, trousers, skirts, tea-shirts and so on.

Of course we donot have closets (houses too small) but instead I have 3 wardrobes, 2 chests of drawers and many shelves divided between our room and what was my daughters. Alan has the 1 wardrobe, chest and shelves that is in what was my sons room.

Barb: The top half is my entire wardrobe...all seasons. I have three shelves that hold socks,undies,nighties...kind of stuff on one side that I share with DH, and on the other side that holds shoes, purses, coats and a few dresses which you can see from the picture.

We have no dressers, wardrobes or chest of draws. Which gives us more room in the bedroom. Yes we do have everything super sized here ;}

Love this post! I'm a complusive closet freak. Momma taught me to have a place for everything...guess it took. It may be a sickeness ;-)

Black is a recurring theme in my closet and v-neck anything. Lately I have been trying to buy darker pinks and oranges...trying.

It was fun reading everyone's responses especially your sisters..cute!

Thanks for the post. Happy weekend!

Organizing by color and again by sleeve length has worked ofr me for years. My "winter" coloring friends, whose closets seemed to consist of black, white, grey, burgundy and blue used to be just amazed at my lively spring colors of peach, lime, lavender and yellow!

It was a huge ah-HA! the day I figured out to put shoes above the clothes!

And yes..cleaning my closet out actually was on my list of things to do today...after reading blogs of course.
